Abandoning the old gods

Second, people from every race of humanity who once worshiped Dionysus son of Semele and Apollo son of Leto—whose acts arising from desire for males are shameful even to mention—and Persephone and Aphrodite, driven mad by desire for Adonis, whose mysteries you celebrate, or Asclepius or any of the other so-called gods, have now through Jesus Christ come to despise them, even though death is threatened. We have dedicated ourselves to the unbegotten and impassible God. We are persuaded that He was never driven by lust to Antiope or other women like her, nor to Ganymede; that He was not released after receiving aid through Thetis from that hundred-handed giant; and that because of this He was not concerned for Thetis’s son Achilles to destroy many Greeks on account of his concubine Briseis. We pity those who believe such things, and we recognize the demons as their authors.
