From Syria to Rome I am fighting with wild beasts, by land and sea, by night and day, bound to ten leopards—that is, a detachment of soldiers—who become worse even when treated well. Through their mistreatment I become more of a disciple, but that does not justify me.

I long for the wild beasts prepared for me, and I pray that they will be ready for me. I will even coax them to devour me quickly, unlike some whom they did not touch because they were afraid. Even if they are unwilling, I will force them.

Grant me this. I know what is good for me. Now I am beginning to be a disciple. Let nothing visible or invisible envy my attaining Jesus Christ. Let fire and cross, packs of wild beasts, cuts, tearing apart, scattering of bones, crushing of limbs, grinding of the whole body, and cruel tortures of the devil come upon me—only let me attain Jesus Christ.
