When he had said “Amen” and completed his prayer, the men responsible for the fire lit it. As a great flame blazed up, we who were granted to see it witnessed a wonder. We have been preserved to report to others what happened.

The fire formed the shape of an arch, like a ship’s sail filled by the wind, and encircled the martyr’s body like a wall. He was within it not like flesh being burned, but like bread being baked, or like gold and silver glowing in a furnace. And we perceived such a sweet fragrance, as though incense or another precious spice were giving off its scent.
